Why choose the EAE program?
The European Adhesive Engineer (EAE) is the highest international qualification within adhesive engineering. The EAE program is taught in English and offered as a blended learning format: two blocks of three weeks of online training are combined with two blocks of two weeks of in-person training at Fraunhofer IFAM in Bremen.
The Bremen location houses the most advanced research lab in the field of adhesive bonding.
With the EAE diploma, you are qualified to act as the ‘supervisor in charge’ for the most critical adhesive applications, responsible for their design and quality assurance.
Fraunhofer IFAM offers this training in partnership with Adhesive Academy, fully recognized by the EWF. In doing so, we give engineers, material specialists and quality managers the opportunity to develop into the expert who can design, assess and optimize complex adhesive processes.
What will you learn in
this training course?
The European Adhesive Engineer course provides you with in-depth knowledge of adhesive technology. You will learn how materials and surfaces behave, which types of adhesives to use, and how to reliably design and evaluate bonds. You will also become familiar with analytical methods and calculation models that enable you to optimize bonding solutions.
In addition to theoretical knowledge, there is a strong focus on practical application and quality standards. This allows you to grow into a specialist and a valuable discussion partner for fellow engineers, quality managers, and clients. In doing so, the course covers a wide range of topics, including:
- Advanced fundamentals of adhesion and polymer chemistry
- Load and stress analysis in design
- Materials science and surface chemistry
- Quality assurance and process verification
- Risk assessment and documentation (QA/QC).
- Destructive and non-destructive testing methods (DT/NDT).

What does the
course include?
The European Adhesive Engineer program combines theory and practice in one intensive course. What prior education do I need for the EAE course?
The course is designed for professionals with a BSc or MSc background in a technical field. Participants are often ultimately responsible for design, adhesive selection or quality assurance within their organizations.
How long does the training last?
The training consists of eight one-week modules spread over approximately seven months. It totals 332 hours, including theory, practice and exams.
What kind of exams are there?
Each module concludes with a written test. In addition, there is an optional practical test and an oral exam at the end. Upon successful completion, you will receive the EWF/NIL 662 European Adhesive Engineer diploma.
Can I participate if I don’t fully meet the admission requirements?
Yes, you can. In consultation with the NIL Adhesives Examination Committee, you can participate as an apprentice or take the EAB course first and then enter via an entrance exam.
