To assess an adhesive bond, destructive testing gives the most complete results. In addition to bond strength, the fracture image provides equally important information. Our tensile testing benches are frequently used during training and during research.
A tensile testing machine can test a multitude and test setups, the test is chosen based on which test is most representative of actual loads.
This blog describes typical testing methods, in addition to these methods there is a multitude of alternative testing methods which are often industry-specific.

The most commonly used test method is a shear test, the ‘single lap shear test’ is most commonly applied.This test method is well reproducible and possible with the mee
ste non-elastic materials.With the lap shear test, 2 substrates of typically 100x25mm are glued with an overlap of 12.5mm, after curing, the
adhesion strength tested by applying a force parallel to the adhesive surface.
This is a typical test for cylindrical bonding, as is often done with anaerobic glue.A metal pin of ø12.7mm is glued into a collar, or flat bushing, with a defined fit. After curing, the bond is loaded on slide by applying a pressure to the pin.

With a peel load, the forces do not concentrate over the bonded surface but only over the width of the bonding surface relative to the peel direction. Disastrous in your design, though valuable as a test.

The most commonly used test is the roller peel test, in which a flexible adhesive part is peeled from a rigid adhesive part. This test is typically used for tapes and thin elastic adhesive bonds.
The adhesion of filling elastic adhesives are usually tested with a bead peel test. No test equipment is required for this test; by manually pulling and cutting an adhesive bead loose, a good picture of adhesion is obtained.
Depending on the type of tape or adhesive, reference values and material properties, alternative peel tests are also performed.

Tensile loading is typically used to test material properties and to test, for example, the properties of sandwich materials.
A ‘dogbone’ test is used to determine material properties such as tensile strength and Young's modulus of elasticity.
A ‘flatwise tensile test’ allows the layers of a sandwich material to be tested purely for tensile strength.
